Year 10

The Year 10 curriculum is structured to provide opportunities for students to pursue their interests and strengths whilst also ensuring that students are exposed to a broad range of experiences as they begin to make important decisions about their future pathways.

English, Maths and Science are core subjects in Year 10 to support students’ ongoing development of literacy, numeracy and science skills that are integral as they continue into their Later Years education. Students may choose the type of maths and science subjects they would like to undertake.

The College also offers the option of our Applied Learning Course to Year 10 students who are interested in hands-on and applied learning. The subjects in this course are designed for students who are interested in pathways such as VCAL, apprenticeships and getting into the workplace. These students study literacy and numeracy courses tailored to their pathways and interests.

VCE Acceleration Program

High achieving Year 10 students have the opportunity to commence their VCE Certificate in Year 10. With the endorsement of the Engagement Leader and Senior Campus Principals, students may enrol to study Units 1 and 2 of a VCE subject of their choice. Upon successful completion of Units 1 and 2, students will go on to study Units 3 and 4 in Year 11. Students accepted into the Acceleration Program will be expected to have outstanding academic grades as well as exemplary records for organisation, behaviour and attendance.

Vocational Education and Training (VET) Subjects

Year 10 students have the opportunity to access one of the VET subjects that are offered internally through an application process. A VET subject is counted as the equivalent of two electives. Entry into VET subjects will be based on teacher recommendations and the student’s application.

Elective Program

The Learning Program for Year 10 students includes a wide range of electives for students to choose from. These electives have been designed to prepare students with the skills and knowledge required for future learning in both VCE and VCAL units of study.

Students will complete six electives, three per semester. The following subjects run for the full year and are therefore counted as equivalent to two electives: AVID, EAL, Concert Band, VCE and VET subjects. In addition to the core subjects of English, Maths and Science, students must select one elective from each of the following learning areas: Health and Physical Education, Arts/Technology and Humanities. The remaining three elective choices may be selected from any learning area. Subjects that are offered will only run based on a sufficient number of students.

Applied Learning Course

The Year 10 Applied Learning Course is specifically designed for those students who are interested in hands-on and applied learning. There are four core subjects in the program: Literacy, Numeracy, Employment Pathways and Skills for Life. 

Prospective students must go through an interview process once they have expressed interest in joining the program.

The purpose of the Skills for Life Subject is to develop knowledge, skills and attributes to lead towards:

  • The development of self
  • Development of self-efficacy
  • Social, emotional, and positive relationship skills
  • Resilience, wellbeing and positive social attitudes
  • Social responsibility
  • Civic participation in a democratic and diverse society.

The Skills for Life Subject is a learning program that provides opportunities for the development of skills which are personal in nature. Personal development in the Skills for Life Subject includes self-esteem and personal qualities developed through personal achievement and contribution for the benefit of community or personal growth. This will involve demonstration of leadership, planning and teamwork skills. It will also involve accepting responsibility for goal achievement and reflecting on knowledge and skills for decision making and problem solving.

Employment Pathways provides students with a focus on work options and pathways to further specific vocational education and training. The purpose of this course is to enable learners to develop skills and knowledge to improve their employability and work readiness. 

The purpose of the Employment Pathways course is to develop knowledge, skills and attributes towards the following:

  • Developing personal effectiveness
  • Preparing for employment
  • Developing an action plan for career planning
  • Contributing to the health and safety of self and others
  • Organising and completing daily work activities
  • Communicating in the workplace
  • Writing routine workplace text.
